My Automatic Door Opener
A lot of life happens in our entry way, which is a generous description of the 7 foot workhorse of a wall that sends us out into the world and welcomes us back home. One of my favorite things that happen in that space is coming home to my automatic door opener. It’s a delightful way to be greeted, never knowing the sweet face that will pop out from behind the front door as I exclaim “Oh I just love my automatic door opener!”
But how do we make sure those sweet door openers don’t trip and fall as the get into place? I’ll show you :) *Confession, this dresser was one that already lived here when we moved in and while I was not a fan originally, I am deeply grateful for the ways it has served our family well during our time in this home.
So enjoy some pictures of our drawers and baskets in the entry way.
Some things worth noting:
We keep the kids shoes and socks in their baskets, since putting on shoes is when they need their socks. (Check out this post to see how our family handles socks!)
Two of my younger kids share a basket since we only had room for three shoe baskets. Baby girl’s two pair of shoes go in with mine and Seth’s.
For the most part we keep our two favorite and most often worn pairs of shoes by the door and the rest of them are stored away in easy to access bins or baskets in nearby rooms.
The bag/coat rack is such a simple DIY. Just cut and stain your 2x4s, then anchor them into the wall. Grab a set of hooks you like, we ordered ours from amazon, and secure them to the board, your preferred distance apart. This gives you 8 well supported hooks with only 4-6 holes in the wall, instead of 8 hooks with 16 holes in the wall! We’ve had a few hooks break over the years but they aren’t hard to replace.
The picture of the drawer bin with the glass protector and nightlight is a picture of the storage hidden below the stackable bins in our families “junk drawer”. (The ones with the money and set of car keys in them.) We got those bins from Ikea and I’ve loved them! It’s a junk drawer, so we do have to reset it every few months, but it works well.
We keep only our favorite or new games in the dresser, the rest of them, to include favorite bulky games, are stored in the laundry room.
We tried keeping the kids Bible in their rooms, but this location makes the most sense for our family and we can just barely squeeze all four of them in.
While I will likely not put a dresser by the door in future homes we live in (I don’t enjoy how the top of the dresser can attract clutter) it has been really helpful and useful. We’ve just had to be very intentional to keep it from becoming a clutter collector.
Overall, this space works really well for our family and we are grateful for it!!
Next stop on the tour: I have no idea. You’ll just have to wait and see!
